Barbie H. DeVellis
Owner, Certified Care Manager
Barbie H. DeVellis is an Aging Life Care Specialist and Certified Care Manager. Barbie has worked over 20 years in the healthcare industry, helping and supporting aging individuals and their families in the Roanoke Valley. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Social Services and has been an Aging Life Care Specialist and Care Manager for 16 years. Barbie has owned her care management practice since 2011.
How It All Started
Barbie’s love of working with the elderly and helping others started at a very early age. Her mom took her to a nursing home to volunteer when she was 10. When her mom’s career would not allow her the time, Barbie walked to the closest nursing home to visit with the residents. It was at that young age Barbie decided she wanted to work with the elderly and people with disabilities.
Professional Experience
While pursuing her degree, Barbie worked as a medical secretary. Once she earned her degree, she started working full time as a Social Worker in nursing homes and rehabilitation centers for five years, one of those years being Director of Social Services. Barbie worked at a home health company for six years where she served as the Director of Home Care Services and Geriatric Care Manager. Barbie also worked as a Hospice Social Worker for over a year where she developed a passion working with and supporting clients and families dealing with end-of-life support issues.
Continuing Education
She keeps current in her field by completing continuing education courses regularly. She focuses her course work in elder care issues, Alzheimer’s, dementia, counseling, family mediation, disease processes, medications, mental health, and personal care issues.
